Evelyn R. Halvorson, 99, formerly of Devils Lake, N.D., passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012.
Evelyn was born April 19, 1913 in Webster, N.D., the daughter of Kate and John Jones. She graduated from Valley City State Teachers College, where she lived in a dorm with her friend, Iris Shipley from Webster. Evelyn taught first grade in Van Hook and Stanley.
She married Art Halvorson and moved several times throughout the west and midwest as Art pursued his career as an automobile dealer. In 1968 they moved back to Devils Lake where Art owned and operated the Ford garage. Evelyn loved moving back to Devils Lake to be near her brothers, sister in laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was active in the Pioneer Daughters, Devils Lake Music Club and several functions at St Olaf's Lutheran Church.
In 2000 Evelyn moved to Greenwich, Conn., to live with her son Jim and his family. She treasured the time she spent with Jim prior to his tragic death in the World Trade Center terrorist attacks. She moved to Vermont in 2002 to be near her daughter Kate and her family.
Evelyn was an avid reader, talented seamstress, award winning weaver, music lover, spirited conversationalist and Minnesota Twins fan. She was warm, loving and will be missed by all who knew her.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Kate and partner Nancy; granddaughters, Meng and XiXi; daughter-in-law, Maureen; grandson, Doug and his wife Elise; great grandson, James; great granddaughter, Elle; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Art; daughter, Jeanne; son, Jim; and her three brothers and their wives.
There will be no service at this time. A memorial service is planned for summer 2013 in N.D.
