  • Because of a funding model being used by the Heart of Missouri United Way, the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter will not receive any funding from the United Way.
The Heart of Missouri United Way has selected the community impact model in directing its agency allocation dollars to support specific “impact” areas within the community.
The American Red Cross chapter will look to the people of mid-Missouri for supplemental financial support. Over the previous two years, the Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter has received $89,964 each year from the Columbia-based United Way.
The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter partners with seven other United Ways and each recognizes the critical role the Red Cross plays in mobilizing communities around priority issues to improve lives.
The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter has promised mid-Missouri high quality disaster and emergency preparedness services. This loss of funding will present challenges for the organization’s ability to provide essential Red Cross services in critical areas such as disaster response and readiness, community preparedness, volunteer recruitment, retention and training, service to military families and health and personal preparedness.
Each year the chapter responds to approximately 175 single- and multi-family house fires and trains more than 11,000 people in first aid, CPR, swimming, lifeguarding and disaster preparedness. These programs help people in the chapter’s 21-county service area lead safer and healthier lives.
2012 has been particularly challenging with the number of single-family home fires that the community chapter has responded to and assisted those clients who, for many, have lost everything they have.
Due to the loss in United Way funding, the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter must now depend on financial contributions of the communities within the Heart of Missouri chapter to support the lifesaving programs of the Red Cross.
