Norma Madeline (Summers) Counsil passed from this life in Springfield, MO on Monday, October 8, 2012 at the age of 96 years after a brief illness. Norma was a long-time resident of Springfield.
Norma was born on June 26 1916 in Elkhart, KS, and was raised in West Plains, MO. She was preceded in death by her husband Myron E. (Cob) Counsil on May 11, 1992, and her parents Ruth and M.O. Summers, brother Othel Ed Summers, sister Marion Roach, and is survived by her sister Delores (Doy) Warner of Springfield, IL. Norma and Myron were married in Eldon, MO on June 7, 1941, and had five children: Philip S. Counsil and wife Martha of La Ceiba, Honduras; Daniel E. Counsil and wife Denise of Peoria, IL; Vicky L. Jackson and husband Wayne of Ozark, MO (formerly of Rolla, MO); John R. Counsil and wife Kathy of Hidden Valley Lake, CA; and Joseph A. Counsil and wife Mary of Rolla, MO. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Norma was a long-time Business Education and Typing teacher in the Springfield, MO school system at Central, Parkview, and Hillcrest high schools.
Norma was known to all as a "sweet lady" - always courteous and cheerful, and concerned for the welfare of others. Her uplifting presence will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
A private burial service for Norma will be held on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Springfield National Cemetery, where her remains will be placed next to her husband Myron. A visitation will be held at Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, October 13 at 10:30 AM, followed by a private memorial service at 11:30 AM under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home of Springfield, MO.
