Police are investigating an early-morning shooting Wednesday involving a 50-year-old woman in St. James.
According to a city-issued press release, St. James police and Phelps County Sheriff's deputies responded to the incident, which authorities believe occurred between 2-4:30 a.m. The woman was found inside the home with multiple gunshot wounds.
The condition of the unnamed woman, who was airlifted to a Columbia-area hospital, was unknown as of press time Wednesday.
Although no suspects have been identified, multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting the police department with the investigation.
St. James City Administrator Jeff Davis said Wednesday morning that there is no perceivable threat to the general public.
"Police believe based on what they were able to gather that whoever did this was not from here," Davis said. "They are fairly sure that they left right after the crime."
St. James Mayor Dennis Wilson said an incident such as this is not the norm in St. James.
"It kind of disrupts the small-town life that we have here when something like this happens," the mayor said.
Anyone with information related to this crime is asked to call the St. James Police Department at 573-265-3777.
