  • A Cuba man is in jail and police are looking for a second suspect following a police chase in Rolla Thursday.
According to a Rolla Police Department press release, William A. Taylor, 23, of Cuba, was arrested for one count of assault in the first degree on a law enforcement officer, one count of robbery in the second degree and two counts of felony resisting arrest. His bond was set at $500,000.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. Thursday, a Rolla police detective observed a vehicle traveling at a very high rate of speed eastbound on Winchester Drive in Rolla. The officer followed the speeding vehicle and began radioing the vehicle description to the Rolla Police Department's Central Communications and other police units.
A short time later a Rolla police officer in a marked patrol unit intercepted the speeding vehicle in the 500 Block of Forum Drive and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated to an even higher rate of speed northbound on Forum and a chase ensued.
The pursuit continued north on Forum Drive and then east on Old St. James Road. As the vehicle turned eastbound on Old St. James Road, it came to a brief stop, allowing an unidentified male passenger to run away. The vehicle then took off again and it was pursued east on Old St. James Road before exiting the city limits of Rolla.
The pursuit continued east on Old St. James Road to the intersection of County Road 3110 and continued eastbound on County Road 3100 until the road came to a dead end. The suspect vehicle then spun out and stalled in a grassy area at the end of County Road 3100 and the vehicle came to a stop in front of the pursuing patrol vehicle.
The Rolla police officer then exited his patrol car and commanded the driver to exit the vehicle, but the driver accelerated rapidly toward the officer in an attempt to run over him.
The officer then shot at the vehicle's windshield and the vehicle finally stopped. The suspect, Taylor, then exited the vehicle and was arrested. Taylor was not injured as a result of the gunshot.
A follow-up investigation revealed that Taylor and the male subject who fled the vehicle were allegedly involved in a strong-armed robbery incident at the JCPenney store on Highway 63 in Rolla that occurred just prior to the Rolla detective observing the suspect vehicle speeding on Winchester Drive.
Other agencies that assisted with the investigation were the Phelps County Sheriff's Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri University of Science and Technology Police Department.
Anyone with information as to the identity of the unidentified male subject who fled the suspect vehicle during the pursuit or who has additional information about this incident are encouraged to contact Detective Hank Harper at the Rolla Police Department at 573-308-1213 or you can remain anonymous by calling the RPD confidential tipline at 573-364-0111.
