McMillan, a former All-America performer from Rolla High School and the University of Nebraska, is slated to begin competition in the women’s heptathlon Friday at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
McMillan is one of 10 heptathlon competitors who reached Olympic Trial qualifying marks. Other provisional qualifiers will also be added to the heptathlon field, to compete Friday and Saturday for berths on the U.S. Olympic Team for the upcoming London Summer Olympic Games.
To qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team in the heptathlon competitors must finish in the top three and are subject to achieving the “A” qualifying standard of 6,000 points.
McMillan qualified for the U.S. Trials through her performance in the 2011 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where she finished third with 6,003 points.
In August of last year she suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in her knee which required surgery, eliminating her from competition the rest of the year.
She began training for the Olympic Trials in March.
The heptathlon is a seven-event competition, including the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.
