With just one week before National Domestic Violence Awareness month is set to begin, a Phelps County man claimed to law enforcement that he nearly lost his life at the hands of his girlfriend late Thursday night.

According to court documents, the man reported that he and his girlfriend, Barbara N. Oprean, 49, of St. James, were sitting in the living room of her home in the 13300 block of Old Highway 66 when she went into the kitchen and retrieved a handgun from a cabinet.

The man told police that Oprean then pointed the gun toward her own head and then toward his, at which time he said she fired the gun as he hit the weapon, keeping the bullet from striking him.

Charges of first degree domestic assault, a Class B felony, and unlawful use of a weapon, an unclassified felony, were filed against Oprean Friday afternoon.

If convicted, she faces five to 15 years in prison. Oprean is scheduled for a case review Oct. 4.
