Defense figures to be the name of the game when the Rolla and Columbia Rock Bridge girls’ soccer teams hit the field tonight in Missouri Class 3 Sectional action.

Rolla will be trying to return to state quarterfinal playoff action tonight when it takes on the Rock Bridge Lady Bruins in sectional action. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at 179 Soccer Park in Jefferson City.

The winner of the Rolla-Rock Bridge clash advances to Missouri Class 3 Quarterfinal play at 1 p.m. Saturday on Slaughter Field in Waynesville against the Nixa (17-5)/Willard (13-11-1) sectional winner.

The two teams moved on by winning their respective district tournament championships. After a scoreless regulation and two scoreless overtimes Rolla finally outlasted Jefferson City in a penalty-kick shootout last Thursday at Columbia in the Missouri Class 3 District 10 Tournament championship game. Rock Bridge clipped Troy 1-0 in the District 9 Tourney title game.

It was the 10th district championship in the last 13 years for the Lady Bulldogs. Rolla stands at 5-4 all-time in sectional competition.

The all-time series between Rolla and Rock Bridge stands at 2-2-1. The two teams met this season in the Quincy Notre Dame Tournament on May 8 and produced a scoreless tie.

The last time the two squads clashed in post-season action was in 2000, when Rock Bridge handed Rolla its lone defeat of the season with a 2-1, double-overtime thriller in quarterfinal action at the Rolla Lions Club Soccer Complex. The Lady Bruins went on to finish third in the state tournament this year.

Rolla is 13-9-2 this season while Rock Bridge stands at 11-10-2.

“Rock Bridge is a strong, well-coached team,” said RHS head coach Mike Howard. “Our game in Quincy against them was a tough, competitive game.”

“It’s an evenly-matched game,” said Rock Bridge head coach Marc VanDover. “It will be a defensive battle.”
