The Phelps County Senior Companion Program recognized 61 seniors for their years of service with the organization at a luncheon held Tuesday.

With the theme, “Volunteers Sow the Seeds of Greatness,” officials from Phelps County, Rolla, St. James, State Senate District 16 and members from the program’s advisory council paid homage to the volunteers who donate their services to individuals and volunteer stations throughout Phelps County.

Primarily funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, the Senior Companion Program also celebrated its 34-year anniversary as a premier provider of volunteer services in Phelps County.

In a tribute to the seniors, Presiding Commissioner Randy Verkamp touched on the theme of the event and addressing the volunteers, said, “We can sow the seeds of greatness, which are fed and watered by God’s almighty hand — you take your precious time, tend to the fields and sow a harvest of greatness.

“Your program, perhaps like no other, is a structured program. You are there, day after day, and you do for us what we, as a government, cannot do,” Verkamp said. “We’re a very grateful county, and congratulations on a job well done.”
