The Rolla High School boys’ tennis team saw its season come to a close during Monday’s rain-delayed Missouri Class 2 District 5 Tournament.


Columbia Rock Bridge won the team title with 37.5 points while Jefferson City was second with 17, Columbia Hickman third with 16, Springfield Hillcrest fourth with 15.5, Rolla fifth with 13.5, Camdenton sixth with 11.5, Sedalia Smith-Cotton seventh with 11 and Lebanon and Waynesville tied for eighth with nine.


The tournament had been slated for Saturday but was backed up due to the weather.

For the Bulldogs in singles competition Adam Newell and Nick Pfeifer were eliminated. Newell lost to Lebanon’s Dereck Scovell 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Pfeifer was beaten by Hickman’s Ben Levin 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Rolla’s No. 1 doubles team of Cody Martin-Brendon Dowdy fell to Hickman’s No. 1 team in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-4 (5) in a match tie-breaker.

The other RHS doubles team of Matt Threadgill-Matt Beasley lost to the Jefferson City No. 1 team 6-4, 6-4 (4) in a second-round match tie-breaker.

Advancing on to the state tournament were Bradford Zitsch of Rock Bridge and Ryan Claypool of Jefferson City in singles action and the Rock Bridge doubles teams of Blake Buchert-James Hunter and Joe LaRose-Sam Johnson.

In the district finals Zitsch beat Claypool 6-1, 6-4 in singles play and Buchert-Hunter topped LaRose-Johnson 6-1, 6-3 in the doubles.
