Third-seeded Camdenton pulled away in the fourth quarter on the strength of its free throw shooting Thursday night, beating the second-seeded Rolla High School girls’ basketball team 54-42 in semifinal play of the Missouri Class 5 District 10 Tournament.

Rolla ends its season with a 11-14 record.

Camdenton will meet top-seeded Jefferson City at 6 p.m. today in the District 10 girls’ championship game. Jefferson City topped fourth-seeded Waynesville 33-30 in the other semifinal game Thursday.

In the boys’ district title game top-seeded Jefferson City plays second-seeded Waynesville at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

The District 10 champions will meet the District 9 winners in Class 5 Sectional action Wednesday at Union High School.

After a sluggish first half it appeared Rolla was ready to stage a comeback. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Camdenton 17-6 in the third period and took a 33-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

However, Rolla’s foul problems began putting the Lady Lakers on the free throw line on a regular basis. Camdenton hit on 15-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter and outscored Rolla 23-9 in the period to roar back in control.

Rolla managed just four points in the first period and trailed 8-4 entering the second period. Camdenton outscored Rolla 17-12 in the second period and took a 25-16 halftime edge.

“The biggest thing was the first half,” said RHS head coach Bryce Swafford. “We didn’t match their energy. Finally in the third quarter we woke up and took the lead late in the third quarter.

“Give Camdenton credit; they played a zone and had us forcing the ball too much. We didn’t hit many outside shots. They basically won the game at the free throw line.”

Senior guard Ijeoma Okafor led Rolla with 10 points.

Haley Baker, a 5-10 junior, fired in 19 points to pace the Lady Lakers while 5-5 senior guard Nickie Branting added 12 points. Camdenton connected on 24-of-28 free throws for the game.

Now the Bulldogs will begin preparing for next season with a large group of returners. RHS loses four seniors in Kaylyn Stoll, Caitlin McFarland, Kelsey Hunt and Okafor.

“A lot of people didn’t think we’d be as good as we were this year,” Swafford said. “I think you give the credit to the leadership our senior group gave us. They were very unselfish.

“We have a lot of things to learn, but we have a bright future with what we have coming back.”
