The Missouri S&T women’s basketball team dug itself an early 9-0 hole and were never able to recover in dropping its regular-season finale 68-60 at Rockhurst in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) action Saturday afternoon.


Rockhurst (9-18, 5-13 GLVC) opened the game strong knocking down four of its first five shots to get the early advantage. S&T (14-13, 8-10 GLVC) on the other hand got off to a very sluggish start shooting the ball making only 1-of-6.


S&T returns to action over the weekend in the GLVC Postseason Tournament against Lewis University at a site to still be determined.

On Saturday the Lady Miners closed to within 9-5 on a pair of free throws by Julie Meyer before the Hawks scored seven of the next nine points to regain the nine point edge.

The lead remained around that margin until the final five minutes of the frame when S&T got hot and eventually closed to within 29-28 on a three-pointer by Katelyn Heil with just over three minutes left in the stanza.

Bri Edwards put Rockhurst back up by three points before Hailee Parks cut the deficit back to one on a layup. Kate Carr extended the lead back to four with less than two minutes to play in the half. Andrea Downs’s jumper with 0:22 left cut it to 34-32 at the break.

The Hawks shot 48.4 (15-for-31) from the floor and were 3-of-8 from long distance. The Lady Miners heated up after their slow start shooting 10-of-24 (41.7 percent). S&T had the edge boards 17-to-15, but were outscored 20-to-12 in the paint.

Rockhurst extended its halftime lead to seven just three minutes into the second stanza opening the frame on a 6-1 run. The lead eventually grew to 48-35 on a layup by Chrissy Sarcone with 14:23 to play.

The Lady Miners began to slowly climb back into the contest and got within six on another layup by Parks. Brittany Percival’s three with 6:24 left closed the gap to four but S&T was unable to get any closer than that down the stretch.

Meghan Hurley hit a jumper from the top of the key as the shot clock was winding down sparking a 6-0 run which extended the lead back to 10 points.

S&T cut it down to six with under a minute left on a layup by Parks, but Rockhurst hit its free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

The Lady Miners shot 41 percent (11-of-27) from the floor in the half while holding the Hawks to just 32 percent shooting. The difference in the second half was Rockhurst went to the line 22 times, making 17 of them while S&T was just 5-for-11 at the charity stripe.

Parks had 14 to lead S&T while Downs dropped in 12. Percival added nine while Heil had eight. Meyer had her 10 game streak of scoring double figures snapped scoring just seven. Parks led the team with seven boards.
