Newburg School District hired John Westerman, on Thursday to replace Superintendent Mike Bumgarner, who has resigned.

Westerman has been the superintendent at Richwood School district, near St. Clair, Mo., for the past three years.

“I am looking forward, to be being back in my home territory,” Westerman said.

Westerman, 51, who is originally from Anutt said that he is very familiar with the area; he taught in the Salem school district and has a daughter who is a senior at Missouri S&T.

He added that he was looking for a district that included a high school; Richwood is only a K-8 school district.

“I think I need the challenge, and I thought this would be nice,” Westerman said.

On Monday, Ron Smith, the board president, said the district was happy about the decision, which came after looking at six candidates during the past month.

“We believe we got a good one in John,” Smith said.

Bumgarner’s final day will be June 30 with Westerman taking over July 1.

“I think the district is headed in the right direction, and I wish the staff and faculty all the best,” Bumgarner, who has been the superintendent for the past two years, said.

Bumgarner also cited wanting to be closer to family as a main reason for moving on. He said that he is currently following some leads on jobs in other districts.

The board also announced teacher hirings and resignations for the next school year.

Debbie Roach, an elementary administrative assistant, who has worked in Newburg for 29 years, turned has decided to retire, while Julie Snook, a high school math teacher has taken another job in a different district, according to Smith.

The board also approved the rehiring of the following non-tenured teachers, Della Bishop, Pat Brooks, Melissa Butler, Joanne Chapman, Casey Clark, Dan Copeland, Philip Gambill, Joe Herdade, Crystal Light, Dianna Martin, Kathy Mudd, Russ Mudd, Paula Pelikin, Anne Rhiener, Oleta Rhodes, James Thompson, Terry Wells, Theresa West, and Dawn Wilking.
