The Missouri S&T Lady Miners struggled defensively in both games of a doubleheader at Missouri Western losing 7-4 and 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo.

S&T (8-15) jumped on top in the first inning when Emily Tucker scored from third on an infield single off the bat of Kristen Drage with two outs. The Griffons (25-4) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

The Lady Miners regained the lead in the top of the second on a lead-off homer to center field from Kassie Deibert for a 2-1 advantage but MWSU answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off homer of its own to tie the game back up.

The wheels began to fall off in the home half of the third as the Lady Miner defense committed four errors in the frame allowing the Griffons to score five unearned runs to take a 7-2 advantage. S&T cut into the lead when Drage led off the fourth inning with a home run then got another run in the sixth when Meghann Morrow scored from second on a throwing error by the catcher to get the deficit to three runs.

Unfortunately it was as close as it would get as it was unable to muster a rally in the seventh inning to try and tie the game.

Drage had three of the Lady Miners five hits in the first game and two RBIs in the loss. Jen O’Hara went the distance allowing all seven runs, two earned, on six hits with two punch outs and no walks to suffer the loss.

In the second game the S&T offense was held without a hit until Tucker led off the fourth inning with an infield single to the shortstop. The defense continued to struggle giving Missouri Western its first run in the second inning when the lead-off hitter reached on an error and came around to score on an RBI single to center field.

The Griffons added another run in the third inning then added two more in the sixth inning for a four run advantage. Tucker tried to rally S&T in the seventh starting things off with a lead-off homer but the next three hitters were set down in order to end the game.

Ashley Wallingford took the loss allowing four runs, three earned, in six innings recording eight strikeouts against only two free passes.

Tucker had both of the S&T hits in game two and scored two runs on the day.

The Lady Miners were scheduled to be back in action at Truman State in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon but those games have been canceled due to wet field conditions in Kirksville, Mo.

The next action for S&T is scheduled for this Saturday afternoon in a GLVC doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 12 p.m.
