A Phelps County deputy was issued a citation for assault in the third-degree early Saturday morning by a Dent County deputy in connection with a “verbal confrontation” with a patron at a restaurant and lounge in Salem.
PCSD Deputy Mark Wynn, 29, was issued the summons after a Dent County “. . . deputy was dispatched to the Roadhouse in regards to a reported assault,” according to a statement released by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department.
The alleged and unidentified victim, a 24-year-old male, stated Wynn “. . . had spit in his face . . .” during the verbal confrontation, according to the statement.
When asked about the incident Wednesday, the then-active sheriff, Don Blankenship, declined to elaborate on the altercation, other than commenting, “An internal investigation is under way, and Deputy Wynn is still a paid employee of this department.”
The newly sworn-in sheriff, Rick Lisenbe, said Wednesday, the day before he officially took office, he was apprised by someone in the Sheriff’s Department that Wynn was placed on administrative leave.
Lisenbe, who approved the list of deputies to be sworn-in Wednesday, said he removed Wynn’s name from the list until he had time to review the allegations or until the investigation is complete.
Wynn, who is one of two K-9 officers in the department, was not sworn in with fellow deputies Wednesday.
“Because I didn’t place his name on the list today,” Lisenbe stated on Wednesday, “doesn’t mean he’s not going to be sworn in and commissioned on another day.”
Additionally, Wynn’s patrol car was seen parked in the department’s parking lot.
Although Wynn recently was celebrated for a drug bust which took 1,213 pounds of marijuana off the street, he also has been named a co-plaintiff in three pending lawsuits against the Sheriff’s Department, one of which was the wrongful death allegations filed in court by relatives of Jimmy Farris.
Farris died after an altercation ensued as the result of a traffic stop.
