AUSTIN, Texas -- The Missouri S&T men’s basketball team has digested the Christmas goose, opened the presents and is now ready to return to the court.
The Miners return from a 16-day holiday break to compete in the Hilltopper Holiday Classic, to be held at St. Edward’s University today and Tuesday in Austin, Texas.
Today the Miners are slated to meet the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions at 1 p.m. and Tuesday they are to face the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers at 3:30 p.m.
S&T enters the game with a 4-4 record, having snapped a three-game losing skid on Dec. 13 by beating Lincoln 86-67 in its final game before the holiday break.
The two-game Texas trip will be the Miners’ final non-conference action before resuming Great Lakes Valley Conference competition. S&T will host Quincy Jan. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building in GLVC action.
Texas A&M-Commerce comes into today’s game with a 4-5 overall mark after dropping a overtime decision at Midwestern State in its last contest Dec. 17.
The Lions are led in scoring by 6-3 senior Deundrae Spraggins, who is averaging 15.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Other starters for Texas A&M-Commerce include 6-6 junior Ronnie Morgan (10.1 points), 6-7 senior Rashad Brown (7.4 points, 7.7 rebounds), 6-1 senior Dominique Taylor (4.7 points) and 6-1 junior Cardell Hunter (13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds).
The St. Edward’s Hilltoppers, the pre-season favorites to win the Heartland Conference, head into this week’s action with a 5-4 overall mark. St. Edward’s last played on Dec. 18, falling at Tarleton State.
Taylor Mullenax, a 6-7 senior, leads the Hilltoppers in scoring with a 17.1 average and also averages 5.8 rebounds.
Other Hilltopper starters include 6-4 junior Reggie Shanks (11.1 points, 5.8 rebounds), 6-4 junior Jannik Zimmer (6.6 points), 6-3 senior Kyle Wakefield (7.4 points) and 6-0 senior Taylor Land (4.9 assists).
The Miners head into today’s game with four players averaging double figures in scoring.
Expected to start for S&T are 6-8 junior forward Adam Knollmeyer (11.1 points, 7.0 rebounds), 6-11 junior center Aaron Redecker (10.3 points, 8.1 rebounds), 6-0 junior guard Justin Taylor (14.3 points), 5-11 junior guard A.J. Mandani (12.4 points) and 6-0 senior guard Curtis Mosley (5.3 points).
