The Phelps County Sheriff’s Department is actively seeking donations for its Cops Care Program, a charitable enterprise that provides Christmas presents for disadvantaged children throughout the county.
Each year the PCSD sponsors the program by coordinating with schools and raising funds for children between the ages of 5 and 12. Many of these local children would not receive Christmas presents without the assistance of the Cops Care Program.
“There is no greater satisfaction than seeing the smile on a child’s face as he or she leaves with their very own Christmas present,” said Sheriff Don Blankenship.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, law-enforcement officials will provide a Wal-Mart gift certificate to a select group of children so they can “shop with a cop” and purchase the gift of their dreams.
The children participating in the event are selected by their schools, based upon a determination that, because of financial hardships, more than likely, they would not receive a Christmas present. In determining which children are selected, the schools also cross reference the number and age of the child’s siblings, who also could be chosen to participate in the event.
PCSD fundraising efforts for this year’s Cops Care Program includes soliciting donations from individuals and businesses within local communities.
The number of children who will be chosen for participation is determined by the amount of funds collected.
This is the 18th year in which PCSD has provided this valuable resource for local, disadvantaged youths.
Last year, the PCSD took 93 children shopping, and each child was provided with a $75 gift card. The goal for this year is $7,500, which would purchase gift cards for 100 children.
To contribute to the program, please make checks or money orders payable to “Cops Care.”  Donations may be mailed in care of the Phelps County Sheriff, 500 W. 2nd St., Rolla, 65401.
