The wrestle-offs have been held and the St. James High School wrestling team is ready to begin its second season of competition.
The Tiger wrestlers are slated to open the season with a dual meet at the School of the Osage on Monday, Dec. 1.
The Tiger wrestling program had its inaugural season in 2007-08.
According to St. James head coach Marty Hauck, most of the Tiger wrestlers will eventually be in a different weight class than they will compete at in Monday’s opener.
“State rules only allow you to go up or down so much in weight,” Hauck said of the early-season schedule. “But we’re ready to get going. Practice has gone great. For the kids who were in wrestle-offs last year, from last year to this year it’s been like night and day. Last year at the wrestle-offs I think we had 23 take-downs. This year we had 54 take-downs. They’re starting to apply what they’ve learned last year and this year.”
However, a bulk of the Tiger squad will still be first-year wrestlers, which means the learning process will be ongoing throughout the campaign.
“Over half our team is in their first year,” Hauck said. “So we’re still learning every time we go out there.”
After the wrestle-offs, here is what the Tigers will send out for the Dec. 1 opener in each weight class:
112 – Andrew Warren, freshman.
119 – Nick DeClue, freshman.
125 – Brittany Kiker, senior.
130 – Payton Woolsey, freshman.
135 – Cory Rose, junior.
140 – Spencer Vanbibber, senior.
152 – Clark Martensen, senior, or Jason Walls, freshman.
160 – Chase Dillon, sophomore.
171 – Joey Bladdick, senior.
189 – Jake Mankin, senior, or Ethan Rodgers, senior.
215 – James Johnson, senior.
Heavyweight – Kevin Harris, senior.
As the season progresses Hauck says the weight classes will change, with Warren possibly going to 103, DeClue to 112, Kiker to 119, Woolsey to 125, Rose to 130, Vanbibber to 135, Martensen to 145, Walls to 140, Dillon to 152, Bladdick to 160 and Rodgers to 171.
“Jake Mankin was one match from going to state last year,” Hauck said. “And Rose was solid. I think six of them can do really well this year. Rodgers has come on and has picked up everything.”
TIGER NOTES – Rose led the Tigers in wins (13) and pins (12) last season. He also goes down in St. James wrestling history as the first Tiger to record a victory.
The three team captains include Martensen, Mankin and Rodgers. Hauck’s assistant coach this season is Craig Lonning.
