As far as the stat sheet goes, there was not a lot of difference between the season Kim Ruth had in 2007 and 2008.

There was a difference that those statistics didn’t show, however, and that is what made Ruth an all-stater this fall.

As far as the stat sheet goes, there was not a lot of difference between the season Kim Ruth had in 2007 and 2008.
There was a difference that those statistics didn’t show, however, and that is what made Ruth an all-stater this fall.
Ruth, a senior outfielder for the Rolla High School softball team, has been selected to the Missouri Class 4 All-State Second-Team, it was recently announced.
The all-state selections were made by the Missouri High School Fast-Pitch Coaches Association (MHSFCA).
“When I found out it was special,” Ruth said. “Last year I didn’t even make all-region, and my stats were really good.”
Ruth had another banner year at the plate and in the field for the Lady Bulldogs in 2008. She led the team in batting average with a .451 mark while hitting five homers, scoring 26 runs, driving in 22 runs and having a .760 slugging percentage.
Those were marks similar to her junior year, during which she was not only shut out of the all-state selections but she wasn’t even all-region.
This season Ruth was named first-team all-region and second-team all-state.
The big difference? The Lady Bulldogs’ record. An 18-game loser in 2007, an influx of young talent helped turn the Lady Bulldogs into an 18-game winner this fall. Rolla finished with a 18-9 overall record in ‘08.
In addition, Ruth proved to be one of the area’s top clutch hitters throughout this past fall. Ruth came through time and again in critical at-bats, including several game-winners. In addition, Ruth set the Lady Bulldogs’ single-season hit record this fall.
“I think it was a combination of things,” Ruth said. “The team was much better as a whole. One thing I did increase was my (Ozark) Conference stats. I think it was a lot of little things.”
“Obviously, with (team) success you get the individual awards,” said RHS head coach Tim Dunn. “It’s hard to tout any kid worthy of all-state with a losing season.
“Kimmy’s name has been out there for four years. As good a season as she had last year, this season was her best by far. The clutch situation was key for us. There were six or seven games where she came up and we needed something done and she came through. And it was not just the little things; she hit homers to give us wins two or three times.”
Ruth hopes to be playing collegiate softball during the 2009-10 school year.
“I’ve put packets together and made videos, sending them to colleges,’ Ruth said. “I’m now looking for colleges more seriously. I looked at Lindenwood and really liked it there. But there are some other schools I’ll be looking at.”
In addition, several area players in Class 2 and Class 1 were also selected all-state. In particular the Frisco League’s Crocker, a Missouri Class 1 state finalist this fall, had four players selected all-state.
