Coupled with a U.S. House lawmakers’ rejection of a $700 billion financial bailout, and a record-making, shock-drop of more than 777 points in the Dow, gold prices soared to over $900 an ounce at one time on Monday as investors sought safe harbors in which to dock their assets.

Generally, gold and short-term Treasury bills have always been considered a safe investment, and many people are taking advantage of the volatile market by either buying or selling in gold.

As a relatively new business in town, the Rolla Diamond and Gold Exchange, barely four-months old, hit the ground running.  Owner Janet Metzger said she and her husband, John Metzger, haven’t even had an opportunity to plan or celebrate a grand opening since they opened in May.

“One of these days, we’re going to have a grand opening,” Janet Metzger said.  “We took the keys to the building on a Friday and opened the doors the next Friday.”
The Metzgers buy gold.  They buy 10 karat, 24 karat and every karat in between.  They buy diamonds and sterling silver.  They do not deal in estate, or antique jewelry, which carries an additional value beyond the “scrap” value, which they determine by weight and purity.
They also sell jewelry, only brand new jewelry and watches, including the largest collection of Masonic jewelry “available within a 50-mile radius,” boasts John Metzger.
“Business is good.  We go on record, categorically, that our payout prices are the best in town.  We invite people to shop us, and essentially, guarantee them our prices are the best,” said John Metzger.
Some people in Rolla are having a hard time, economically, John Metzger admits.
“One lady came in today to sell some gold so she could visit her husband in the hospital,” he said.
The Metzgers charge $5 to replace watch batteries, all the funds from which they deposit into a large container that they will give to the Salvation Army at the end of the year.
In his former profession, John Metzger was the United States Marshall for the Western District of Virginia.  He also was the chairman of the Virginia Parole Board.
For many people, having previously invested in gold jewelry that they no longer want or that is broken, the Gold Exchange is a viable method by which to convert it into cash.
