A murder-suicide early Sunday in southern Dent County apparently started from a domestic altercation, according to a report from Dent Count Coroner Eddie Wilson.

Pronounced dead at the scene at 2:21 a.m. by Wilson are Randy Lee Schafer, 48, and Roger Shelton Mahurin, 44. The shootings occurred at Schafer's residence on Dent County Road 6490 north of Jadwin.

The Dent County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call of a double shooting south of the junction of Highways K and E at 1:30 a.m. Upon the deputy’s arrival, Schafer and Mahurin were still alive — Schafer in the kitchen area and Mahurin on the front porch.

Both died after an ambulance and a helicopter arrived, Wilson said.

In his report, Dent County Sheriff Bob Wofford stated the altercation led to Schafer obtaining a handgun from the bedroom. His wife took the handgun from him and placed it back in the bedroom. Mahurin then went to the bedroom, retrieved the handgun, and confronted Schafer, immediately shooting him twice in the left chest area. Schafer fell to the floor and was shot again in the neck. Mahurin then put the handgun below his chin and shot.

Assisting at the scene were the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Salem Memorial Hospital and the Jadwin Fire Department.
