The storylines on most medical shows work off two ideas: 1) When our bodies stop functioning the way they should it’s either dramatic or funny. 2) Doctors are people too. How a show approaches the second idea sets the tone. Are its doctors emotionally scarred from a botched operation, traumatic case or romance gone wrong? Are they intellectually not up to the task, putting patients in danger? Do they lack empathy or are they too sensitive to their patients’ problems? Are they drug addicts?...
